One

Where the name came from

An elder who was close to Muffy's grandfather said something to him he never let go of. You've got all these things you've put together for your life, he said. They're all components of your life.

That was the name. Not a marketing exercise — a description of what was already true.

“All these components of your life.”

Woodlawn is not a location. It's the reason.

Muffy's family came up to Chicago from New Orleans and Memphis in the 1950s and made the South Side home. His grandmother taught track and field right here. His grandmothers went to Hyde Park together.

So when the store talks about running in this neighborhood, it isn't outreach. It's three generations deep.

Retail is the family trade

His family ran retail doors through the '90s. He grew up behind a counter, learning what makes somebody walk back into a shop a second and third time.

Later he ran a Converse raffle with Virgil Abloh. When you line those pieces up, a running store on 67th Street stops looking like a leap and starts looking like the sum.

Eleven men

Eleven men in Muffy's life have had prostate cancer. Uncles. His father's friends. Older cousins. He never has.

He started reading everything he could find, started the conversation with men who weren't having it, and prayed on it. The answer he got was that he had to do something. So he built a 5K — with doctors on site and the whole thing pointed at the families.

“I never had it. Eleven men around me did.”

Leave like it's your second home

Ask Muffy what he wants somebody feeling on the way out and he doesn't start with the shoes. He wants you feeling like you just left your second home. Good about yourself first. Active. And good about what you bought — in that order.

That's the whole business model, honestly. The shoes are just how it pays for itself.
